Chapter 19 - The Confession at the Well

Mark did not go alone.

He told Ellis about the message and waited inside the garden gate while she positioned officers within sight of the well.

At nine, Margarethe appeared in a dark coat, holding a small tin box.

She looked older than she had four days earlier.

"You've ruined us," she said.

"You brought us here."

"Your father promised he'd protect this family. Then he gave half our future away."

"He protected the town. That was his choice."

Margarethe opened the tin.

Inside were Henry's fountain pen and a bundle of handwritten practice signatures.

"He signed the charter," she said. "He never signed the revocation. I used his old stationery after he died."

Mark felt the night turn unbearably quiet.

"And my signature? Hannah's? Claire's money?"

Margarethe looked down.

"I thought I could repair everything after the sale."

"You took from a dead woman and a little girl."

"I didn't mean for Lily to be hurt. She found the necklace, then that second opening. I lowered the bucket to frighten her into silence. When she climbed onto the ledge, I panicked."

"You could have pulled her up."

Margarethe began to cry.

"I thought if the police came, they'd find it all."

"So you chose the money."

She didn't deny it.

Ellis stepped from the shadows, said she had heard the admissions herself, and informed Margarethe that she would be taken in for questioning.

Margarethe stared at her son.

"You set me up."

"No," he replied. "I gave you one more chance to tell the truth."

Officers escorted her toward the gate.

Mark remained by the well, staring at the black circle that had nearly taken his daughter.

His phone rang.

It was Samir.

"The district attorney is moving on the forgeries," he said. "But there's one last decision. The court wants to know who will manage the restored trust."
