Chapter 12

Vanessa was arrested that afternoon.
Not for attempted murder.
Not yet.
The initial charges involved evidence tampering, forgery, child endangerment, and conspiracy to fabricate an emergency.
Daniel thought the word "initial" was doing too much work.
Vanessa appeared by video for the bond hearing.
She wore no makeup.
She looked smaller.
For one dangerous second, Daniel remembered the woman he had married.
Then she saw him in the courtroom gallery and mouthed, You did this.
He almost believed her.
That was the old reflex.
Grace sat beside him.
Lily was with a child advocate at home.
The prosecutor described the recorder, the staged emergency call, the forged placement form, and the financial motive.
Vanessa's attorney attacked Grace.
"Ms. Cole illegally entered a private residence in violation of a court order."
Grace's lawyer stood.
"She entered after receiving a message stating her child was in danger."
The judge raised a hand.
"We are not retrying custody today."
Vanessa was denied contact with Lily.
Bond was set high.
As deputies moved her away from the screen, she shouted, "Daniel! Ask Grace why she really had that recorder!"
The room erupted.
Daniel looked at Grace.
She stayed still.
Outside the courtroom, he asked.
"What did she mean?"
Grace exhaled.
"I didn't give Lily the recorder only because I was afraid of Vanessa."
"What else?"
"I was afraid of you."
Daniel flinched.
Grace continued.
"Not that you would hurt her. That you would keep refusing to see what was happening."
He had no answer.
Grace pulled an old email from her phone.
Sent eight months earlier.
Subject: PLEASE READ BEFORE COURT.
Daniel had never seen it.
It described Lily saying Vanessa made her "practice being scared."
It attached photographs of bruises from a fall Lily said happened while Vanessa was supervising.
Daniel searched his inbox.
Nothing.
Spam.
Nothing.
Archived mail.
Nothing.
Then his IT manager called.
"Daniel, we checked the family email account."
"And?"
"Someone created a rule last year."
"What rule?"
"Anything from Grace, her attorney, or her sister was automatically forwarded to another address and deleted."
Daniel's voice went flat.
"Which address?"
May you like
The answer was not Vanessa's.
It belonged to someone inside Daniel's own company.
