Chapter 15
The red phone belonged to Vanessa.
It had no service.
No SIM card.
Only videos.
Dozens.
Some showed Lily answering questions.
Some showed Vanessa rehearsing statements.
One showed Dr. Mercer sitting at the dining table while Lily colored nearby.
Vanessa said, "If Grace gets full access again, everything becomes harder."
Mercer replied, "Then stop giving the court reasons to reconsider."
Vanessa smiled.
"I am."
Another video was worse.
It had been recorded accidentally with the camera facing down.
Only voices.
A door.
Lily crying.
Vanessa: "Tell me what you saw."
Lily: "You pushed me."
Vanessa: "No."
Lily: "You did."
Vanessa: "Say you slipped."
"I didn't."
"Say it."
"No."
A long silence.
Then Vanessa's voice became soft.
"If you keep lying, Daddy will send you away."
Daniel had to stop the video.
Grace took the phone from his hand.
"There is more."
Near the end was a clip from the afternoon of the pool incident.
Vanessa stood beside the pool with Kyle.
Lily was off camera.
Vanessa whispered, "The alarm is off?"
Kyle said yes.
"What about cameras?"
"Seven minutes."
Then Lily's voice asked, "Can I go inside?"
Vanessa turned toward her.
"No."
The video ended.
It did not show the splash.
It did not show a push.
But it destroyed the story of an accidental, unsupervised fall.
Ruiz called it corroboration.
Daniel called it the moment he stopped wondering whether some part of Vanessa could still be explained.
The final file on the phone was dated the night of the hallway attack.
Vanessa had recorded herself in the bathroom mirror.
She practiced crying.
"My husband's ex-wife broke into our home."
Again.
"Grace attacked me."
Again.
"I was only protecting Lily."
Daniel stared at the screen.
At the end, Vanessa stopped crying instantly.
She checked her makeup.
Then she said to her reflection:
"By tomorrow, the child is gone."
Grace whispered, "That's enough."
But Lily, standing in the doorway, shook her head.
"No."
They turned.
She looked at the red phone.
"There is one after that."
Daniel checked.
A file marked 7:18 p.m.
Two minutes before Grace entered the house.
He pressed play.

And heard Vanessa speaking to Lily.
This time, the bat was already in her hand.
