Chapter 7

Dr. Elliot Mercer had treated Vanessa five years earlier.
Not for trauma.
Not for grief.
For a professional licensing evaluation after she had been accused of falsifying patient records at a private clinic where she worked as an administrator.
That relationship should have disqualified him from evaluating Lily.
He had signed a disclosure stating he had no prior connection to either household.
Grace closed her eyes.
"She picked him."
Daniel's attorney continued.
"There is more. Mercer received three consulting payments from a company called Sterling Family Advisory."
Vanessa's maiden name was Sterling.
Daniel said nothing.
"Daniel?"
"I heard you."
By morning, the house felt like a crime scene.
Police had taken the bat, the recorder, the disposable phone, and copies of the index cards.
Vanessa was ordered to stay elsewhere while investigators reviewed the threat and possible child endangerment.
She left through the front door wearing sunglasses.
Before getting into her attorney's car, she looked at Daniel.
"You are destroying our family because Grace knows how to manipulate you."
Daniel did not answer.
Lily did.
From behind him.
"We were a family before you came."
Vanessa's jaw tightened.
Grace put a hand on Lily's shoulder.
"Inside, sweetheart."
Lily obeyed.
Daniel watched Vanessa's car disappear through the gate.
Then he noticed a black SUV parked across the street.
The same one he had seen outside his office twice that month.
Mason saw it too.
"Do you know that vehicle?"
"No."
Mason photographed the plate.
The SUV pulled away.
An hour later, Daniel's attorney arrived with financial records.
"Before you decide this is just about custody," she said, "you need to see these."
Vanessa had opened a line of credit eight months earlier using a holding company tied to Daniel's investment firm.
The guarantor was listed as D. Cole.
Daniel had never signed it.
The debt was $680,000.
Grace stared at the page.
"What does this have to do with Lily?"
The attorney turned to the next document.
A petition had been drafted but never filed.
It requested permission to move assets from Lily's maternal trust into a "consolidated protected investment structure."
Daniel's signature line was blank.
Vanessa's was already signed.
Grace went white.
"My mother's trust?"
The attorney nodded.
"Three-point-two million dollars."
Daniel looked at the date on the draft.
Tomorrow.
Vanessa had planned to put it in front of him the morning after the hallway incident.

And suddenly the recorder was not just evidence of cruelty.
It was evidence of motive.
