Chapter 4

The framed photograph was exactly where Lily said it would be.
Grace stood in Daniel's study while Mason lifted the old picture from the wall. It showed Daniel, Grace, and newborn Lily before the divorce, before accusations, before lawyers, before every conversation became evidence.
Taped behind the frame was a brass key.
Daniel stared at it.
Vanessa had moved that photograph three times.
He had always put it back.
Now he understood why.
Police secured the key, then opened the nursery.
There was no furniture inside.
Only shelves.
Boxes.
And a child's red metal lunchbox.
Lily began crying when she saw it.
Grace knelt beside her.
"You don't have to go in."
"I want Daddy to see."
Daniel's throat tightened.
Officer Ruiz opened the lunchbox.
Inside were folded drawings, a flash drive, three printed screenshots, and a stack of small index cards.
Daniel picked up the first card.
IF DADDY ASKS, SAY MOMMY SCARED YOU.
The second:
IF THE LADY FROM COURT ASKS, SAY MOMMY YELLED IN THE CAR.
The third:
DO NOT TALK ABOUT THE POOL.
Daniel sat down on the floor.
For six months, he had believed Lily's sudden fear of Grace was proof that the custody evaluator had been right.
He remembered asking Lily, "Did Mommy scare you?"
Lily had nodded.
He had not noticed Vanessa standing in the doorway.
Grace read another card.
Her face crumpled.
"I knew she was being coached."
Daniel could barely look at her.
"You tried to tell me."
"Every time."
Vanessa's voice came from the hallway.
"This is insane. Anybody could have written those."
Ruiz blocked the doorway.
"Stay there."
Daniel lifted one of the screenshots.
It showed a text conversation from Grace's number.
YOU WILL NEVER KEEP HER FROM ME.
He had shown that exact message to his lawyer.
Grace shook her head.
"I never sent that."
Daniel looked at the timestamp.
Something bothered him.
He opened his phone and searched old travel records.
That message had been sent while Grace was in a courthouse conference room with no phone access.
Daniel looked at Ruiz.
"Can texts be spoofed?"
"They can be fabricated or sent through cloned accounts."
Grace picked up the flash drive.
"What is on this?"
Vanessa shouted from the hall.
"Do not plug that into anything!"
Everyone turned.
May you like
She had just answered the question none of them had asked.
The drive mattered.
