Chapter 13 - The Teddy Bear

Ellie was discharged into Graham's care on Wednesday evening, but she begged him not to take her back to the mansion.
“Please, Daddy. The walls there know my secrets.”
Graham knelt beside her hospital bed. “Then we won't go back. I promise.”
Lena's sister Renee offered her small house near the river while police arranged a safer temporary place. She had a spare room with yellow curtains, and she didn't mind when Ellie asked to sleep with the hallway light on.
At dinner, Graham burned the grilled cheese sandwiches. Ellie stared at the black edges, then laughed for the first time since the rescue.
“You're really bad at this,” she told him.
“I've been told,” he said, smiling through the shame.
But when the washing machine in Renee's kitchen beeped, Ellie dropped her fork and crawled under the table. Graham reached for her, and she recoiled.
Lena switched off the machine.
“Ellie, it's only a noise,” she said gently. “You're right here with us.”
Ellie nodded without coming out.
Later, a delivery driver left a white gift box on the porch. Inside was Ellie's favorite teddy bear, the one she'd kept in her bedroom at the mansion. A card read, FROM VICTORIA. I MISS YOU.
“Throw it away,” Graham said.
But Ellie started crying. “Mr. Buttons didn't do anything wrong.”
Lena checked the box before handing the bear over. Something hard pressed against the fabric beneath one stitched ear.
She called Mara instead.
The small object inside was a location tracker. Its recent activity showed someone had been checking where Ellie was every few minutes.
Mara looked up from the device. “Who knew this address?”

“Only my lawyer and two security officers,” Graham said.
Outside, headlights blinked on across the street.
