Chapter 16 - Victoria's Price

On Friday morning, Victoria asked to speak to the district attorney. Her attorney wanted a deal. The prosecutor promised nothing, but allowed a recorded interview.

Before she began, Mara showed her the forged statement bearing Margaret Bell's name. Victoria shut her eyes. “Elliot had her signature on an old employment form. He told me the petition would keep Ellie away from the police.”

“And Claire's account on the security system?” Mara asked.

“Elliot kept it active. He used it to change the camera recordings and open doors. He said nobody would ever know when he'd been inside.”

Victoria sat beneath bright lights with no makeup and dark circles under her eyes. She looked less like the woman who ruled the Whitlock mansion and more like someone who had spent years waiting for a door to open.

“Elliot told me Ellie had discovered Claire's note,” she said. “I got angry. I wanted the child to be afraid of disobeying me.”

Mara said nothing.

“I shut her in the washer. I told Elliot to let her out after I went upstairs. I swear I didn't know he meant to start it.”

“Did you check on her?”

Victoria stared at the table. “No.”

“And when Graham came home, you told him she hid herself.”

A tear slid down Victoria's cheek. “I thought if I admitted it, I'd lose everything.”

“You nearly made a little girl lose her life,” Mara said.

Victoria began to shake. “I was there the night Claire died. Elliot pushed her. I didn't call for help because he said I would go down with him for stealing the donations.”

“You could have told the truth at any time.”

“I know.”

The confession wasn't forgiveness. It was evidence. Investigators later confirmed that Elliot's administrator credentials had been used to schedule the washer's cycle after Victoria went upstairs.

Victoria gave them a second piece of information: Elliot planned to take a company boat from the Harbor House gala to a private marina, then leave the country on a charter flight. He'd ordered the remaining paper records moved to the old boathouse.

Mara called her team. “Secure the water access. Nobody approaches him alone.”

As she stood, Victoria caught her sleeve.

“He knows Graham will make a speech tonight,” she said. “And he left a message saying he has one last way to make him shut up.”
