Chapter 17 - The Room Full of Witnesses

The charity gala went ahead, but it was nothing like Elliot had planned. Police waited near the service exits, and Graham refused to deliver the glossy speech his publicist had written.
Instead, he stepped to the microphone and looked at the donors who had trusted his family.
“My wife Claire founded Harbor House so children would have somewhere safe to sleep,” he said. “After she died, I trusted people who stole from it. I signed reports I didn't read. That was negligence, and people suffered because of it.”
Phones rose across the ballroom.
Amber Ruiz stood near the back, holding her son's hand. Graham looked at them, not at the cameras.
“The sale is stopped. The accounts are frozen for review. We're putting independent people in charge of rebuilding what was taken.”
Then Elliot appeared beside the stage.
“You're destroying a business over a dead woman's paranoia,” he snapped.
Graham turned toward him. “Claire wasn't paranoid. She was right.”
Elliot's eyes flickered toward two detectives moving through the crowd.
“You think you're innocent?” he hissed. “You let me handle everything.”
“No,” Graham said. “I let you. Now I'm answering for it.”
Elliot shoved past a server and sprinted through the side doors. Mara's officers followed, but the service corridor opened into a maze of storage rooms and old passages leading down toward the river.
Lena, helping Amber and her son toward the main exit, saw a man drop a ring of keys near the side hallway. She recognized Elliot's heavy silver boat key.
She told Mara over the radio, then moved away from the crowd.
At the loading dock, a hand caught her arm from behind.

Elliot pressed something hard against her back.
“Not a sound,” he whispered. “You're coming with me.”
