Chapter 7 - The Transfer Order

The woman introduced herself as Dr. Paige Finch of Northstar Children's Recovery Center. She carried a leather folder with the Whitlock family crest printed on its front.
“Mr. Whitlock arranged the transfer,” she told the charge nurse. “The child needs immediate psychiatric assessment.”
Graham stepped into the hallway. “I arranged nothing.”
Finch barely blinked. “Our office received a digitally signed authorization at 10:42.”
Lena moved between Finch and Ellie's door. “She isn't going anywhere.”
“Ma'am, please don't interfere with medical care.”
Detective Sloane held out her hand. “Let me see the order.”
Finch passed over the papers. The signature looked exactly like Graham's. His date of birth was correct. So was Ellie's insurance number.
But the attending physician's name had been spelled wrong.
Mara pulled out her phone. “Hospital security, third floor. Now.”
Finch suddenly backed toward the elevators. “I need to speak with my director.”
“Stay right there,” Mara said.
The elevator doors opened. A man wearing an orderly's uniform stepped out, saw the detective, and ran.
He made it only halfway to the stairs before two security guards tackled him onto the carpet. Inside his bag was an unmarked bottle of sedatives and a change of children's clothes.
Graham's voice broke. “What were they planning to do with her?”
The detective didn't answer. She was reading the transfer order again.
“Northstar isn't licensed as a residential children's facility in New York,” she said. “And the phone number belongs to a shell company.”
Lena looked at the letterhead. “Who owns it?”

Mara turned her phone so they could see the registration record.
The company was controlled by Elliot Crane.
