Chapter 11 - The Scaffold

The scaffold collapse had never reached the news.

I searched public records and found only a brief incident report describing two injured workers and “equipment failure.”

Miguel Santos answered when I called.

“You heard about Westhaven?” he asked.

“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”

“Because Mercer settled with both families before the inspectors finished.”

“Was the equipment defective?”

Miguel hesitated.

“The safety subcontractor had been replaced two months earlier.”

“With Blue Alder?”

“No. Another company. Redline Site Services.”

I searched the flash drive.

There it was.

Redline invoices totaled $611,000.

The address belonged to a mailbox store.

Maya traced the registered agent.

Same law office connected to Patricia’s brother.

I felt sick.

Employee benefit money. Fake vendors. Safety spending routed through shell companies. My loan used to plug one hole while another grew.

Then an email surfaced in Daniel’s copied folder.

FROM: PATRICIA MERCER

TO: DANIEL MERCER

SUBJECT: WESTHAVEN

Keep Elena out until after the ceremony. She will insist on disclosure.

Daniel’s reply contained only four words.

I can manage her.

I read it twice.

The pain was quieter than the slaps, but deeper.

He had not lost control in the ballroom because I embarrassed him.

He had lost control because I failed a plan.

My phone rang.

A woman introduced herself as Grace Nolan, former payroll manager for Mercer Construction.

“I sent the texts,” she said.

“Why anonymously?”

“Because Patricia ruined Lydia’s career. She tried to ruin mine too.”

“What do you have?”

“A ledger.”

“Where?”

“Not over the phone.”

Then Grace lowered her voice.

“And Elena, Daniel knows I contacted you.”

May you like

“How?”

“Because he is parked outside my house.”
