Chapter 12 - Grace Nolan

I told Grace not to open her door.
Maya called police while I called Vincent, the hotel security director, who had given me his direct number after the wedding.
By the time officers reached Grace’s street, Daniel’s SUV was gone.
Grace agreed to meet us at Maya’s office with two officers present.
She arrived carrying a grocery bag.
Inside was an old black ledger.
“Patricia likes paper,” Grace said. “She trusts computers only when she controls the password.”
The ledger tracked transfers between employee benefit accounts, vendor accounts, and a line labeled FAMILY STABILIZATION.
Several entries matched Blue Alder payments.
Others matched Redline Site Services.
Then I saw my own name.
ELENA T. - 186K - BRIDGE.
Grace pointed to the next column.
“Your money did not save payroll. It restored a benefit payment just before an outside audit.”
“So they used Blue Alder to move it?”
“They moved money through shells until the books looked temporary instead of missing.”
Maya asked, “Who authorized this?”
Grace turned the ledger around.
Initials appeared beside nearly every major transfer.
PM.
DM.
Patricia Mercer.
Daniel Mercer.
Grace swallowed.
“I confronted Daniel last year. He said his mother had created the system before he became president and he was trying to unwind it.”
“Did you believe him?”
“For about a month.”
“What changed?”
“He asked me to backdate a reconciliation.”
I sat back.
Then Grace removed a small digital recorder from the grocery bag.
“I recorded our last meeting.”
She pressed play.
Daniel’s voice filled the room.
If Elena marries me, the bank problem disappears. She has enough outside assets to carry the covenant.
Another voice—Patricia’s—answered.
Then make sure she gets to the ceremony before she sees the real numbers.
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Then Maya’s receptionist entered.
“There is a man downstairs asking for Elena.”
“Daniel?”
She shook her head.
May you like
“Howard Mercer.”
“He says Patricia just fired him from his own company.”
