Chapter 9 - After Ceremony

Daniel called me fourteen times that afternoon.
I answered the fifteenth with Maya recording from her end.
“Elena, please. You’re hearing half the story.”
“Then tell the other half.”
“My mother moved money without telling me.”
“Your signature approved Blue Alder payments.”
“I sign hundreds of things.”
“You forged my signature on a guaranty.”
Silence.
Then: “I was going to explain.”
“After the ceremony?”
He did not answer.
I looked at the memo in front of me.
“What does ‘bridge guarantor’ mean, Daniel?”
“Nothing.”
“It meant enough for your mother to write it on an internal financing memo.”
His breathing changed.
“Elena, the company has fifteen active projects. If the lender pulls the line, hundreds of people get hurt.”
“That does not give you my signature.”
“I knew you would help once we were married.”
There it was.
Not I thought you might.
I knew you would.
“Why?” I asked.
“Because you love me.”
“No. Why did marriage matter?”
Another pause.
“Because the bank wanted stable capital behind the guarantor.”
“So you planned to present my money as marital capital.”
“We would have been a family.”
I almost laughed.
“You slapped me for refusing to carry drinks.”
“That was a mistake.”
“The first slap or the second?”
He swore under his breath.
Then his tone changed.
“Give me the drive and I will repay every dollar you put into the company.”
Maya’s eyebrows rose.
I said, “That sounds like an offer to buy evidence.”
“No. It’s our money.”
“Our?”
“The wedding happened, Elena.”
“No. The ceremony happened. The license was never signed or filed.”
Daniel went silent.
May you like
Then he said something I had not expected.
“Yes, it was.”
