Chapter 19 - Daniel’s Choice

Daniel asked to speak with Maya present.
We met in a small conference room downstairs.
He did not apologize first.
That told me more than any apology could have.
“I knew the lender would not renew the line without outside support,” he said. “I knew you had assets. I convinced myself the company would recover before you ever carried real risk.”
“So you forged my signature.”
“Yes.”
“And the marriage certificate?”
“I told my mother we needed something temporary if the officiant delayed filing.”
“Temporary fraud.”
He looked down.
“I know how it sounds.”
“It sounds exactly like what it is.”
Daniel admitted he had hidden the benefit shortfall from me and delayed sending me the full financial package until after the wedding.
“Why hit me?” I asked.
His face changed.
“I lost control.”
“No. You felt entitled to control me.”
He did not argue.
That mattered more.
Then he slid a key across the table.
It belonged to a private storage unit.
“The archive box from Commerce Street is there. I moved it because my mother wanted it destroyed.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“You should not. Give the key to investigators.”
Maya took it without touching the metal directly.
Daniel leaned back.
“I thought if the refinancing closed, I could put everything back.”
“That is what people say when they turn theft into borrowing.”
He winced.
I stood.
“Elena, I did love you.”
I looked at him for a long time.
“Maybe you loved the version of me who would save you.”
He had no answer.
Before I left, he said, “The men at the wedding knew nothing about the guaranty.”
“I know.”
“So why does that part matter to you so much?”
“Because you needed me to obey before you could believe I would sign.”
I opened the door.
“And I need you to understand something, Daniel.”
He looked up.
May you like
“The wedding did not expose your mother.”
“It exposed you.”
