Chapter 10 - What an Apology Cannot Fix

Adrian asked to meet Clara in the office of a family mediator. She agreed only after her lawyer arranged separate arrival times and confirmed Tessa would be present. Emma remained with Tessa's mother for the hour.
Adrian did not bring flowers. He did not say he had made a mistake as if he had spilled coffee. He sat across from Clara and looked directly at the bruise on her cheek.
"I assaulted you," he said. "I did it in our home, with Olivia watching. There's no excuse."
"You believed Vanessa without asking me what happened."
"Yes."
"You ignored every warning about the money."
"Yes."
"And when Emma reached for me, you treated me like the danger." Clara's voice broke. "That's the part I still hear at night."
Adrian's eyes filled. "I will cooperate with the police. I'm starting counseling. I'll follow whatever parenting arrangement keeps you and Emma safe."
"That's what you should do. It doesn't buy forgiveness."
"I know."
Clara handed him a drawing Olivia had made of the family the previous winter. Vanessa was missing from it. Adrian realized Olivia had been seeing the truth long before he had.
"Emma can have a father," Clara said. "But I will never teach her that loving someone means accepting a slap."
He accepted the boundary. It was the first useful thing he had done for Clara in days.
Outside, Tessa met them with her car keys and a worried face. Vanessa had filed a petition asking the family court to appoint her temporary guardian of Emma, alleging that Clara was emotionally unstable and Adrian was unable to protect the child.
The papers included a sworn statement from an anonymous witness.
