Chapter 5 - The Broken Drawer

The caller was Tessa Gray, Clara's closest friend and a former coworker from the children's emergency department. She had driven to the Cole house to collect fresh clothes for Clara and Emma. The front door was unlocked. Upstairs, Clara's small home office had been ransacked.

"Your desk drawer is broken," Tessa said. "Papers are everywhere. Someone pulled the back panel off the cabinet."

"Don't touch anything," Clara told her. "Leave the house and call the officer who took our report."

"I already did. Clara, your blue folder is gone."

Clara's stomach dropped. The folder held copies of the trust statements and notes from meetings with a forensic accountant. Its contents could show where Olivia's money had gone. Vanessa had demanded it the night before, insisting the information was private family business.

"Did you see Vanessa?" Clara asked.

"Her car was leaving when I arrived."

Clara ended the call and returned to Emma's bedside. Adrian was waiting in the corridor. She gave him the details but not the comfort he wanted.

"You believed her because it was easier than listening to me," she said. "You heard one accusation and hit me in front of your children."

"I know." His throat tightened. "I don't expect you to forgive me."

"Good. Because I don't."

She told him the account transfers began sixteen months earlier. Briarfield Supply had billed Cole Restoration for building materials that never arrived. The company paid the invoices, and money also moved out of Olivia's trust under the label of short-term investments. Clara had noticed the pattern while helping Olivia prepare a scholarship application.

"I asked Vanessa for receipts. She threatened to have me declared unfit as Emma's mother. I told you. You said she was just protective."

Adrian pressed his palms against his eyes. "I should have checked."

"You should have believed me when I said I felt unsafe."

Clara's phone buzzed again. A message from an unknown number filled the screen.
