Chapter 12 - The School Gate

Olivia was in algebra when the school counselor asked her to come to the office. A man had appeared at the front gate claiming he was authorized to take her to a family appointment. He said his name was Marcus Pike.
"I don't have a family appointment," Olivia told the counselor.
"We know. Your father is on his way, and we've notified the school resource officer. You stay here."
Marcus left before police reached the gate. Security footage captured his face and license plate. Olivia sat with a paper cup of water in her hands, angry at the way her body shook even when she knew adults were protecting her.
Adrian arrived without a word of criticism. "I'm sorry he came here. Do you want me to call Clara?"
"Yes," Olivia said. "And Dad? Don't make me prove I'm scared. Just believe me."
"I do."
The police took a statement. Olivia told them about the hidden phone and gave them the message Marcus had sent. Investigators already had the stroller footage preserved, along with its original file information. Taking her phone away would not erase the evidence.
Later, Adrian learned that Marcus had been dismissed from the company's consulting contract months earlier, but Vanessa had kept paying him through Briarfield. Ruth traced one of those payments to the morning of the stroller incident.
"She paid him before she pushed it," Adrian said.
"That is what the bank record shows," Ruth answered. "We need the investigators to determine why."
That night, a local neighborhood group shared a short video of Adrian striking Clara. No one could see Vanessa or the stroller. The post called Clara a dangerous mother and Adrian a violent husband.
Adrian recognized his action. The violence was real. The accusation against Clara was false.
