Chapter 1 - The Clause

My attorney's warning was still glowing on my phone when Evelyn tightened her grip around my fingers.

"Claire," she whispered, "if Harold learns I gave you those pages, he'll say I'm confused. He always does that when I remember too much."

I looked again at the bank statements spread across the hospital blanket. Carter Meridian Holdings had sent $480,000 to Westlake Advisory, $720,000 to Harbor Point Logistics, and another $315,000 to a company I recognized immediately.

Northstar Benefits Group.

A year earlier, my team had reviewed a fraud complaint involving Northstar. The case had died because ownership records led to empty offices, mailbox companies, and lawyers who refused to identify their clients.

Now the same company was taking money from my new husband's family business.

"Where did you get these?" I asked.

"Harold's desk."

"Why were you looking?"

Evelyn touched the swelling beneath her eye. "Because thirty-two years teaches you where a man hides what he thinks belongs only to him."

My phone rang.

Daniel.

I let it ring until it stopped.

Then a message appeared.

I'M SORRY. DAD WAS DRUNK. I WAS DRUNK. COME HOME AND WE'LL FIX THIS.

A second message followed before I could breathe.

DO NOT LET MY MOTHER FILL YOUR HEAD WITH THINGS SHE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND.

Evelyn saw it.

"He sounds like Harold when he's scared."

I called my attorney, Maya Brooks.

"Read me the clause," I said.

Paper moved on her end.

"It says you waive any civil claim connected to undisclosed financial conduct by Daniel, Harold, Carter Meridian, or affiliated entities that occurred before or during the marriage."

"That's insane."

"It gets worse."

"How?"

"It requires you to surrender any documents obtained through your professional work if they involve Carter Meridian."

I looked down at Northstar's name.

"They knew what I did for a living."

"Yes."

"Daniel told me his father barely knew what compliance meant."

Maya went quiet.

"Claire, there's one more paragraph. It was added yesterday morning."

Yesterday.

Before the wedding.

"What does it say?"

"It says that if you refuse to sign, Daniel may seek an immediate annulment and allege that you entered the marriage under false pretenses."

"They prepared to attack me before I said 'I do.'"

Evelyn slowly opened her purse again.

"Then you need to see why."

She removed a folded sheet I hadn't noticed before.

At the top was a list of internal file names.

One of them read:
