Chapter 14 - The Three Men

The hotel footage ended any remaining fantasy that my marriage had simply collapsed because Daniel lost his temper.

This had been organized.

Harold carried my laptop.

Victor used the printer.

Daniel stood watch.

Three hours later, Daniel stood beneath white roses and promised to protect me.

My employer cleared me by noon.

They also referred the unauthorized access for investigation.

Daniel sat alone in a conference room while his own lawyer spoke quietly beside him.

He looked smaller than he had at the altar.

I felt nothing I trusted.

Maya touched my elbow.

"We have enough to protect you. Now decide what you want to do with the marriage."

"There is no marriage."

"Legally, there is for the moment."

"Then end it."

She nodded.

Across the hall, Evelyn met with independent directors.

Her voting rights were temporarily restored after hospital records showed she could not have signed the resignation.

The board placed Harold and Victor on leave pending investigation.

Then the company's controller, Luis Moreno, asked to speak privately.

"You need to understand the transfers weren't just theft," he said.

"What were they?"

"A cover."

He opened a spreadsheet.

Millions had moved through vendor companies, yes.

But another column tracked something worse: employee injury settlements, disability claims, and pension obligations that had been quietly reduced after money left the reserve accounts.

People had lost medical coverage.

Families had accepted smaller settlements.

Retirees had been told the fund was underperforming.

My father had been one of hundreds.

Luis swallowed.

"There is a master ledger. Harold never kept it here."

Evelyn looked at him.

"Where?"

"The penthouse."

The place where Harold had hit her.

The place where Daniel had hit me.

Luis continued.

"Behind the wine wall."

Then he looked at Evelyn.

"If Harold realizes we know, he'll destroy it before tonight."
