Chapter 19 - Evelyn Votes

The emergency board meeting happened two days later.
No ballroom, family portraits, or Harold at the head of the table.
He attended by video with counsel while the assault and financial investigations continued.
Evelyn entered carrying her father's old corporate bylaws and the original emergency-resolution copy from the archive.
Harold laughed when he saw it.
"That clause is dead."
Independent counsel disagreed.
It had never been superseded.
The board recognized Evelyn's authority pending full shareholder review. Then she made the motion herself.
"Remove Harold Carter as chief executive. Freeze all executive discretionary transfers. Begin an independent forensic review of employee benefit losses back to the earliest available records."
A director seconded it.
The vote passed.
Harold's screen went silent.
For thirty-two years, Evelyn had survived by lowering her voice.
This time she didn't.
"You don't get to call this family business anymore."
The connection ended.
Daniel resigned immediately after the vote.
He also signed a statement acknowledging his role in false vendor approvals, the unauthorized use of my laptop, and the wedding-night plan to pressure me into the postnup.
When he handed it to investigators, he looked at me once.
I did not look away.
Maya filed the paperwork to end the marriage.
Evelyn moved into a small condo across town.
Nora Hales joined the employee-restoration committee formed by the independent board.
And my employer formally cleared me.
It felt like the story was finally narrowing toward an end.
Then Officer Patel called.
"Claire, we've finished cataloging the penthouse safe."
"Okay."
"There was one sealed item we couldn't identify. It has your name on it."
"From Harold?"
"No."
"From Daniel."
May you like
"What is it?"
"A letter dated the morning of your wedding."
