Chapter 16 - Fear Was the Weapon

USE FEAR, NOT FORCE.
Harold hadn't needed to kill my father.
He had threatened his job references, his mortgage, my career, and the retirement money Dad had already lost.
The pressure had done enough.
Investigators recovered the recorder's files the next morning.
One was a conversation between Harold and my father.
My father's voice sounded tired.
"You can keep the money. I want the records corrected for the other people."
Harold laughed.
"You think you're a hero because your daughter works in compliance? She has a career because people like me decide which doors stay open."
My father answered quietly.
"Leave Claire out of this."
"Then sign."
"No."
The recording ended.
I sat in Maya's office with both hands flat on the table.
For years, I had thought Dad gave up because I asked him to.
He hadn't.
He had kept fighting while protecting me from the fight.
Evelyn cried without making a sound.
Then Maya slid another document toward me.
"There's something else."
A beneficiary schedule from an old Carter Meridian insurance policy.
Harold had insured several executives and outside "risk subjects" under corporate-owned policies.
My father's name appeared in a draft schedule, but the policy had never been issued.
"So no one profited from his death," I said.
"Correct. This matters because we don't invent crimes where the evidence doesn't support them."
I nodded.
The door opened.
Daniel stood outside with his attorney.
"Claire, can I speak to you?"
"No."
He looked at the recorder transcript.
"I heard it."
"Good."
"I didn't know Dad threatened your father."
"You knew enough."
He swallowed.
"I have one more thing."
Daniel handed Maya a sealed evidence copy.
"Dad kept a second ledger with names of people who helped him."
Maya opened the index.
Halfway down the page was a name I knew.
May you like
Mark Ellison.
My director at work.
