Chapter 17 - The Name at My Office

I refused to believe it until I saw the supporting records.
Mark Ellison had approved three consulting payments from Carter Meridian to a research vendor connected to my employer.
That did not prove he had helped Harold commit fraud.
It proved he had a relationship he never disclosed.
I called our ethics hotline instead of confronting him.
By afternoon, external counsel had taken over.
Mark was placed on leave.
His final message to me said only:
YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW MANY PEOPLE HAROLD OWNS.
I saved it.
Then deleted his contact.
Evelyn spent the day giving a formal statement about decades of abuse and financial coercion.
When she finished, she looked exhausted but lighter.
"I kept thinking silence protected Daniel," she said. "It only trained him to become his father."
Daniel heard her from the doorway.
His face folded for one second.
Then he looked at me.
"She's right."
"I hit you because I saw what Dad always did and thought that was how men ended arguments."
"That's an explanation. Not an excuse."
"I know."
He held out his wedding ring.
"What do you want me to do with this?"
"Whatever you want. It isn't my problem anymore."
He closed his hand around it.
Later, Maya told me Daniel had agreed to cooperate with investigators and preserve the hidden inbox.
Cooperation did not erase what he had done.
That evening, Evelyn and I returned to her temporary apartment.
A package waited outside the door.
No return address.
Inside was a single old photograph of my father and Martin Hales standing beside a warehouse.
On the back someone had written:
THE LEDGER IS REAL. THE TOTAL IS NOT.
Beneath it was an address.
214 West Mercer Street.
Evelyn whispered, "That's the old Carter Meridian archive building."
Maya looked at me.
May you like
"If there's another ledger, we do not go there alone."
Then the apartment lights went out.
