Chapter 11 - Vivian’s Signature

Vivian always called herself practical.
She managed problems.
Family problems.
Money problems.
Image problems.
Apparently I had become all three.
The forged insurance consent connected her directly to the plan months before the terrace fall.
Not necessarily to violence.
Marcus showed me the timeline.
Policy application.
House transfer.
Crown Meridian expansion.
Contractor payment.
Audit irregularities.
My confrontation with Adrian.
Then Adrian’s hospital confession.
One line after another.
A pattern no single piece could carry alone.
That was how real cases worked.
Not one dramatic clue.
Then Detective Ortiz visited.
“We arrested Paul Danner.”
“He admits he was paid to alter the terrace hardware.”
My stomach turned.
“By Adrian?”
“He says the instructions came through a property manager.”
“Name?”
“Vivian Mercer.”
I closed my eyes.
Ortiz continued.
“He claims he was told it was for replacement work and that the area would be closed.”
“Do you believe him?”
“We believe documents.”
I smiled faintly.
“I like you.”
She almost smiled back.
The payment trail matched.
Vivian to intermediary.
Intermediary to Danner.
But intent remained a question.
Did Danner know someone might fall?
The hospital audio helped.
Adrian’s own words:
The fall was supposed to end this.
That established his intent.
Vivian’s words established knowledge after the fact and possibly before.
Then Ortiz said:
“We found something on Adrian’s second phone.”
A message to Vivian, sent six days before my fall.
H keeps asking about the terrace contractor.
Vivian replied:
Then move faster.
My heart slowed.
“Anything else?”
Three words from Adrian:
Before she files.
The audit complaint.
He knew I was preparing to report him.
That was motive.
Then another message.
Adrian to Claire:
After Friday, everything changes.
Claire had thought he meant the merger.
Ortiz closed the file.
“You built half this case before you hit the ground.”
“No.”
I looked at the ceiling.
“I built a financial case.”
“And they built the rest.”
Then Marcus walked in holding one final surprise.
“The board found the missing audit packet.”
“Where?”
“In Adrian’s office.”
“Why now?”
Marcus looked grim.
May you like
“Because somebody put it there yesterday.”
Someone was still moving evidence.
