Chapter 14 - Blue Harbor

Blue Harbor Trust held $930,000.

Registered beneficiary:

Hannah Mercer.

I had never seen it.

Never signed for it.

Never received a statement.

At first, that looked like hidden money in my favor.

Then Marcus traced the source.

Three corporate settlements from cases I worked years earlier.

Money that should have gone to clients.

Someone used my old credentials and reputation to open the trust.

My name became camouflage.

Adrian had not only stolen from me.

He had built a future defense.

If the fraud surfaced, Blue Harbor made me look involved.

A forensic investigator with a secret trust full of client money.

I felt physically sick.

Marcus said:

“We can prove you didn’t open it.”

“How?”

“IP logs. Signature analysis. Email records.”

“Who did?”

“Vivian.”

My mother-in-law.

She had kept copies of old identity documents from our wedding paperwork.

Adrian moved money through the trust.

Then back into Crown Meridian.

A circular trail designed to blur ownership.

Ortiz said:

“If Hannah died, this account could be discovered later and used to damage her reputation.”

That was the final cruelty.

They planned not only my death.

They planned my disgrace.

I lay in the hospital bed and stared at the ceiling.

Adrian used to say reputation was everything.

I thought he meant business.

He meant leverage.

Then Marcus showed me the one transaction he could not explain.

$210,000 transferred from Blue Harbor to a legal defense escrow.

Months before my fall.

Not for this case.

For another investigation.

A state charity regulator had quietly opened a file on the Mercer Family Foundation.

Vivian knew months ago that auditors were coming.

That was why she needed money.

That was why Adrian’s company was draining cash.

That was why the fraud accelerated.

The family was already collapsing before I ever found the ledger.

I whispered:

“They weren’t trying to build a future.”

Marcus shook his head.

“They were trying to survive the past.”

Then Ortiz entered with handcuffs visible on her belt.

“Vivian Mercer was arrested this morning.”

I breathed out slowly.

“And Adrian?”

Ortiz’s face hardened.

May you like

“He’s making a deal offer.”

Of course he was.
