Chapter 12 - The Missing Packet

The packet should have been in my locked office.

I copied it before confronting Adrian.

Then it disappeared.

Now it was in his office.

Too convenient.

Marcus thought so too.

Security logs showed only four people entered Adrian’s office after my fall.

And Adrian’s younger brother, Evan.

Evan had barely appeared in the story.

That bothered me.

Invisible people often matter.

Evan arrived at the hospital the next morning.

A public-school teacher.

The only Mercer who never joined the family company.

He looked wrecked.

“I moved the packet.”

Marcus stood near the window.

“Why?”

Evan looked at me.

“To keep them from destroying it.”

I said nothing.

“Mom called me after the fall.”

Vivian told him I had hidden documents.

She ordered him to search my office.

He found the packet.

Read enough to understand.

Then moved it into Adrian’s office, behind a locked file cabinet.

“Why there?”

“Because Mom never searches Adrian’s office. She thinks he controls it.”

He gave Marcus the key.

Then his face crumpled.

“I should have called police.”

“Yes,” I said.

He looked surprised.

I did not comfort him.

“But you didn’t destroy it.”

“No.”

“That matters too.”

Real families rarely divide cleanly into heroes and villains.

Evan had been afraid.

He also made a choice that preserved evidence.

Then he told us something worse.

Vivian had been paying Adrian’s debts for years.

Gambling losses.

Failed investments.

Adrian was not nearly as wealthy as he appeared.

The insurance money was not only about a new life with Claire.

It was survival.

Crown Meridian hid debt.

My house backed loans.

My death would erase the person most likely to expose all of it.

Marcus asked:

“How much debt?”

Evan swallowed.

“Almost four million.”

My marriage had not been built around love turning bad.

It had been built around a financial collapse I never knew existed.

Then Evan added:

“And Mom mortgaged her own house too.”

Marcus frowned.

“Why?”

“To keep Adrian’s company alive.”

I understood.

Vivian was not protecting her son because she believed he was innocent.

She was protecting the lie that her family was still powerful.
