Chapter 15 - Adrian’s Offer

Adrian offered everything.

Accounts.

Passwords.

Vendor names.

Records.

Testimony against Vivian.

In exchange, he wanted a reduced sentence.

He blamed his mother.

Vivian blamed him.

Marcus called it the family’s final business meeting.

No loyalty once the numbers changed.

I met with prosecutors by video.

Not to demand punishment.

To explain harm.

And to correct one thing.

“Adrian is going to say Vivian controlled him.”

The prosecutor nodded.

“She did influence him.”

“Yes.”

I took a breath.

“But he bought the policy.”

“Yes.”

“He hid the second phone.”

“Yes.”

“He admitted the fall was supposed to kill me.”

“Yes.”

“He chose.”

The prosecutor wrote that down.

Choice mattered.

Vivian had trained Adrian to protect image and money.

She did not move his hands for him.

Then Adrian asked to speak to me.

He sent a letter.

I did not read it.

Marcus asked if I wanted him to burn it.

“No.”

“File it.”

Evidence first.

Physical therapy began.

Walking felt impossible.

I took six steps the first day.

Eight the second.

Progress refused to be dramatic.

One afternoon Nurse Elena brought me a small paper bag.

Inside was the transmitter.

“Property returned.”

It had captured the moment arrogance became evidence.

I asked:

“Did you know Marcus was outside?”

“I knew somebody was.”

“You trusted me?”

“I trusted the look on your face when you asked for help.”

That stayed with me.

Then she added:

“You scared me when you opened your eyes.”

I laughed until my ribs hurt.

That evening Marcus arrived with trial dates.

Adrian’s plea offer had been rejected.

Too much evidence.

Too much planning.

Too much obstruction.

He would face trial.

Vivian likely would too.

Claire would testify.

Paul Danner would testify.

I would testify if medically able.

Then Marcus handed me a photograph from the terrace.

Not the broken railing.

The security camera above the garden door.

I stared.

“I thought that camera was dead.”

May you like

“So did Adrian.”

It wasn’t.
