Chapter 8 - Crown Meridian

Claire had created Crown Meridian.
Not alone.
At Adrian’s instruction.
Originally, it was supposed to hold a private investment.
Then Vivian saw its usefulness.
Payments moved through it.
The house deed moved into it.
Insurance premiums came out of it.
Money from Adrian’s company entered through consulting vendors.
Claire became the person who made the paperwork look ordinary.
She told Marcus everything that morning.
Not because she suddenly became brave.
Because she realized Adrian would sacrifice her first.
Marcus downloaded the account history.
The numbers were worse than my ledger.
$1.7 million moved through Crown Meridian in eighteen months.
Some returned to Adrian.
Some to Vivian.
Some to Claire.
Some to an insurance broker.
Some to a contractor named Paul Danner.
Ortiz already knew the name.
Paul had worked on the terrace two days before my fall.
The invoice described “drainage inspection.”
No drainage work occurred.
Now police had a payment.
A false description.
And Claire’s statement.
“You went to Marcus?”
“You betrayed me.”
“That word from you?”
Vivian stepped between them.
“We need lawyers.”
Claire shook her head.
“I already have one.”
That frightened Vivian.
Then Claire looked at me again.
“I never knew about the policy until after the fall.”
Adrian said:
“Shut up.”
“No.”
She turned toward him.
“You told me Hannah was leaving you.”
“She was.”
“You said the house transfer was temporary.”
Adrian looked away.
“You said we’d fix it after the merger.”
He had lied to Claire too.
That did not make her innocent.
It made the structure clearer.
Adrian sat at the foot of my bed.
His face looked older.
Vivian whispered:
“What did Marcus promise you?”
Claire answered:
“Nothing.”
“Then why?”
“Because I finally understood what happens when Adrian decides somebody is useful until they aren’t.”
She looked at me.
“I was next.”
Then the door opened.
Detective Ortiz entered with two officers.
“Adrian Mercer?”
“We have a warrant for your phone.”
Vivian demanded:
“On what basis?”
Ortiz looked at Claire.
“New evidence.”
Adrian slowly handed over the phone.
But he was smiling.
That worried me.
May you like
Then I understood why.
The phone they took was not his real one.
