Chapter 1 - The Suitcase on the Porch

Ryan did not look guilty when I walked into our living room.

That was the first thing that scared me.

He sat beside Elise Hart, one hand resting on the curve of her pregnant stomach, while my mother-in-law stood behind them like she was presenting a business deal.

My suitcase was on the porch. Divorce papers waited on the coffee table.

I still had the ultrasound picture in my purse.

“Ryan?”

He finally looked up.

“It’s over, Madeline.”

Victoria folded her arms. “We’ve waited eleven years. Ryan needs an heir.”

Elise smiled at me. “You should probably leave. Stress isn’t good for my baby.”

My fingers closed around the edge of the ultrasound.

I could have ended the room with six words.

I’m pregnant with Ryan’s child.

Instead, I looked at the man who had watched me lose three pregnancies, hold ice packs against my stomach after procedures, and tell me we were in this together.

“Did you know she was pregnant when you filed?”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“That’s not the point.”

It was exactly the point.

I signed nothing.

I took the suitcase, the papers, and my purse.

Victoria followed me to the door.

“You’ll make this easier on yourself if you don’t fight.”

I turned.

“For once, I agree.”

Her smile faded.

By dusk, I was sitting beside a quiet road with a dead phone and swollen feet when a black SUV rolled to the curb.

An elderly man stepped out.

“Madeline Carter?”

I stood slowly.

He held a sealed envelope.

Across the front was my father’s handwriting.

FOR MADDIE. ONLY IF THE VANCES MOVE FIRST.

My knees almost gave out.

“My father died eleven years ago.”

“I know,” the man said. “My name is Samuel Bell. I was his attorney.”

I tore the envelope open.

The first document carried Victoria Vance’s signature.

The second carried Ryan’s.

Samuel watched my face.

“Before your husband learns about that baby, you need to know what his family did eleven years ago.”

May you like

I looked down at the date.

It was the day before my wedding.
