Chapter 7 - The Night My Father Died

Samuel waited until Nina closed the office blinds.
Then he told me.
Eleven years ago, Dad had discovered that Vance Development was using Carter-backed projects to hide inflated invoices.
Money moved through shell vendors.
The excess returned as private loans to Ryan’s father and Victoria.
Dad planned to expose it after my wedding.
“Why after?”
“He was afraid you would defend Ryan if he moved too soon.”
That hurt because he had been right.
Three days before Dad died, Caleb Mercer agreed to turn over the original ledgers.
He never showed.
Dad drove to meet him anyway.
His car left the road in heavy rain.
The police called it an accident.
“What did you think?”
Samuel looked at the table.
“That someone wanted the Red Ledger more than they wanted Thomas alive.”
My throat closed.
“You let me believe the accident story.”
“Your father ordered me to protect you if he died before proving it.”
“Protect me by lying?”
“Yes.”
I stood so fast the chair hit the wall.
“No more.”
Samuel nodded once.
“No more.”
He unlocked a safe.
Inside was a small digital recorder.
Dad’s voice filled the room.
“Maddie, if you hear this, I ran out of time.”
My knees weakened.
He explained the Continuity Trust.
The fraud.
The Vances.
Then his voice changed.
“There is one thing I have not told you because I need proof before I put it in writing. Victoria has access to your medical schedule. I don’t know why.”
I covered my mouth.
Dad continued.
“If your marriage ever becomes the weapon they use against you, remember this: Ryan signed the original trust acknowledgment. He cannot claim ignorance.”
The recording clicked off.
Then Samuel played a second file.
A man’s voice.
Caleb Mercer.
“I’ll bring the ledger tonight.”
A woman answered.
“No. Bring it to me.”
I knew the voice.
Victoria.
Then came one final sentence.
“If Thomas gets there first, stop him.”
No one spoke.

My phone lit up.
