Chapter 19 - The House He Threw Me Out Of

I returned to the house with Nina, a court officer, and a locksmith.

Ryan stood on the porch.

The same porch where my suitcase had waited.

Elise had already moved out.

Victoria was in jail.

The Christmas wreath still hung crooked on the door.

Ryan looked at the court order in Nina’s hand.

“I know.”

“Then you know why we’re here.”

He stepped aside.

Inside, nothing had changed.

My mug sat beside the sink.

My coat still hung in the hall closet.

Eleven years reduced to objects nobody had bothered to move.

Ryan followed me into the living room.

“I’ll leave today.”

“You should.”

He looked toward the coffee table.

“That’s where I put the papers.”

“I remember.”

“I thought if I moved fast enough, I could get out before Mom’s financial mess reached me.”

“So you chose Elise.”

“I chose the story where I wasn’t responsible for anything.”

That was the first truly honest sentence he had given me.

I opened the safe behind the bookshelf.

The trust inventory said Dad had placed one sealed box there.

Ryan had never known.

Inside was a small baby blanket.

A letter.

And a deed.

Dad had purchased the house in my name through the trust before my wedding.

His note was short.

MADDIE - A HOME SHOULD NEVER BE SOMETHING SOMEONE CAN USE TO MAKE YOU BEG.

I sat down.

Ryan read it over my shoulder.

His face collapsed.

“I’m sorry.”

I folded the letter.

“I believe you.”

He looked up.

“But I’m still done.”

He nodded.

Then the front door opened.

Samuel stepped in holding a courier envelope.

“Madeline, this came from the prosecutor.”

Inside was Caleb Mercer’s signed cooperation statement.

The last page contained a list of people who had received Vance money.

One name stopped me cold.

Dr. Evan Cole.

My fertility doctor.

Beside his name was a payment dated three months ago.

After I had become pregnant.
