Chapter 3 - The Room My Father Kept Locked

We drove to Carter House before sunrise.
I had not been there since Dad’s funeral.
The old brick estate sat behind iron gates outside Decatur, dark except for one upstairs light Samuel swore he had not left on.
“Stay in the car.”
“No.”
“Madeline—”
“My name is on the deed.”
That ended the argument.
The side door showed fresh splinters around the lock.
Inside, the hallway smelled like wet wood and dust.
Samuel led me upstairs.
My father’s records room had been opened.
Cabinet drawers hung out.
Folders covered the floor.
Someone had searched fast.
“What were they looking for?”
Samuel moved toward a steel file cabinet.
The bottom drawer was empty.
He swore under his breath.
“What?”
“Audit file. Your father called it Red Ledger.”
My stomach tightened.
“What was in it?”
“Payments from Vance Development to people who should never have been on a construction payroll.”
A floorboard creaked behind us.
Samuel pushed me sideways.
A man in a black hoodie rushed out of the dark hall.
He slammed Samuel into the wall and ran.
I chased him down the stairs before my body reminded me I was pregnant.
“Stop!”
He reached the kitchen.
The back door opened.
I caught only one clear detail before he vanished into the yard.
A silver ring on his right hand.
A V inside a circle.
I had seen that ring before.
Ryan wore one exactly like it on our wedding day.
Samuel came down holding his shoulder.
“You recognize it.”
“Yes.”
He pulled his phone out.
“Then we call the police.”
“No.”
He stared at me.
“Not yet.”
I picked up one folder the intruder had dropped.
Inside was a photocopy of a fertility clinic invoice.
My name was typed across the top.
Eleven years of appointments flashed through my head.
Then I saw the line marked AUTHORIZED CONTACT.
Victoria Vance.
I looked at Samuel.
“Why was my mother-in-law authorized to receive my medical billing?”
May you like
He went still.
“She wasn’t supposed to be.”
