Chapter 12 - The Story Victoria Needed

Nina filed an emergency response before noon.
Detective Ortiz contacted every patrol district with my location and status.
Samuel called the trust board.
Victoria’s lie collapsed quickly.
But not quietly.
By lunch, local reporters were outside the courthouse.
Someone had leaked the divorce.
Someone had leaked the pregnancy.
And someone had leaked the claim that I was unstable.
My phone filled with messages from people I had not heard from in years.
I turned it face down.
“This is what she does,” I said. “She creates the story first.”
Samuel nodded.
“Your father said the same thing.”
Ortiz returned from the unfinished Vance property.
Elise was not there.
But they found blood on a chair.
Not much.
Enough.
And a burner phone taped beneath a stair rail.
It contained one video.
Caleb sat in front of a blank wall.
“Mrs. Carter,” he said, using my maiden name. “Your father should have accepted that some families survive by staying useful to each other.”
I hated how calm he sounded.
“Elise Hart is alive. She will remain alive if you return property that does not belong to you.”
He meant the ledger.
Then he smiled.
“Ask Samuel Bell what happened after your father left the parking garage.”
The video ended.
I turned toward Samuel.
“What happened?”
His face emptied.
“Thomas called me.”
“And?”
“He said George Vance had threatened him.”
“That’s not all.”
Samuel looked at the floor.
“He also said Ryan was there.”
I stopped breathing.
“Ryan?”
“Not in the garage. Outside.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because your father made me promise to wait until I had proof.”
I walked straight into the interview room.
Ryan looked up.
I put both hands on the table.
“Were you with my father the night he died?”
May you like
His eyes filled before he answered.
“Yes.”
