I came home two hours early and heard my daughter screaming upstairs.

Not crying.

Screaming.

When I ran into the nursery, our housekeeper, Maria, was on the floor holding Lily.

My wife stood over them, furious.

“She dropped her,” Claire said.

Maria immediately shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Fire her. Right now.”

For a second, I believed my wife.

Then Maria looked straight at me and whispered:

“Please watch the camera first.”

Claire froze.

“What camera?”

I looked toward the baby monitor above Lily’s crib.

Three days earlier, I had replaced the memory card.

So I opened the app.

The video loaded.

Lily was sitting peacefully on the rug.

Then Claire walked into the room.

She checked the hallway.

Picked up our daughter.

And what happened next made Maria cover her mouth and start crying.

Before I could watch another second, Claire grabbed my phone and screamed:

“You have no idea what that baby has done to my life!”

That was when I realized I had come home early for a reason.
