Chapter 3 - AFTER MIDNIGHT

I opened the first night clip in a private consultation room with Detective Lena Ortiz and a hospital social worker present.

Claire wasn’t allowed inside.

At 1:13 a.m., the nursery door opened.

Claire walked in wearing a robe.

Lily was asleep.

Claire stood over the crib for almost a minute, completely still.

Then she reached into her pocket and took out a small dropper bottle.

My chair scraped backward.

“What is that?” I asked.

Detective Ortiz paused the video. “Do you recognize it?”

“No.”

On the recording, Claire tipped something into Lily’s nighttime water cup.

A second clip showed the same thing three nights later.

A third showed her carrying a sleeping Lily from the crib to the rug, taking photographs of bruises on her arms, then putting her back.

“What the hell is she doing?” I whispered.

The detective didn’t answer.

Maria did.

“Building a story.”

I looked at her.

She sat with both hands locked together. “Mrs. Bennett started asking me strange questions two months ago. Whether Lily fell often. Whether she had nightmares. Whether she hit herself when upset.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.” Her voice broke. “Twice. She told me if I scared you with accusations, she would say I stole jewelry. I have a son in college. I couldn’t risk losing my job.”

I wanted to be angry at her.

Instead, I hated myself.

Detective Ortiz asked for Claire’s handbag.

Security brought it in.

Inside was a prescription bottle with the label peeled off.

Claire started shouting from the hallway when she realized what they had found.

“That’s mine! It’s for anxiety!”

The detective opened the cap, looked inside, then sealed it in an evidence bag.

My phone rang.

It was my attorney, James Holloway.

“Daniel,” he said, “did you authorize a guardianship petition involving Lily?”

My mouth went dry.

“No.”

There was a long pause.

“Then somebody forged your signature.”

I stood so fast the room tilted.

“What petition?”

“The one requesting that, if Lily is found medically or emotionally impaired, temporary control of her trust transfers to your spouse.”

I looked through the glass at Claire.

She was no longer crying.

May you like

She was staring directly at me.

And smiling.
