Chapter 19 - THE VISITOR

Claire was in county custody.
She could not have spoken to Lily yesterday.
At least, that was what I thought.
Detective Ortiz reviewed every visitor log, phone call, and transport record.
No contact.
Then Lily explained.
“She was on the tablet.”
The old tablet from the nursery had been packed with Lily’s toys.
I powered it on.
A messaging app I didn’t recognize opened automatically.
There was one video message.
Claire appeared on screen wearing jail-issued clothing.
“Lily,” she said, “I’m sorry. I know you don’t have to forgive me. I just need you to tell your daddy something.”
She looked over her shoulder.
“Someone from the old house is still watching him.”
The video cut.
Ortiz traced the message to an unauthorized phone used inside the detention center. Claire had apparently bribed another inmate to send it.
“Why warn us?” I asked.
“Maybe guilt,” Ortiz said. “Maybe leverage.”
The answer came that night.
A man was arrested outside our new brownstone carrying photographs of me, Lily, and Maria.
He had worked security for my father twenty years earlier.
In his apartment, police found boxes of corporate records my father had hidden before his death.
Records showing Henry had created a private fund to pay anyone willing to protect the Bennett name from scandal.
The fund was still active.
An automated trust kept sending money.
My dead father was still paying people to keep secrets.
James helped us petition the court to freeze it.
When the order was signed, nearly six million dollars remained.
I asked the judge to redirect any legally recoverable portion toward victims of the fraud and organizations supporting abused children and domestic workers.
Maria cried when I told her.
“You don’t have to fix everything your father did,” she said.
“I know.”
“Then why?”
I looked at Lily asleep on the couch.
“Because I can fix what I do next.”

The next morning, Claire requested to speak with me before entering her plea.
She said she had one final truth about Emma.
