Chapter 14 - BLACKOUT

Emergency lights flashed red along the corridor.
Alarms began chirping.
Nurses moved quickly, locking patient rooms.
I ran toward Lily.
A security guard stopped me. “Sir, stay back.”
“That’s my daughter.”
Maria was already ahead of me.
We reached Lily’s room.
Empty.
The bathroom was empty too.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
Then a nurse shouted from the stairwell.
We found Lily two floors down in Maria’s arms.
Maria had grabbed her the second the lights died and taken the service stairs because she remembered Claire once asking which elevators worked during emergency power loss.
“You saved her again,” I said.
Maria shook her head. “Not yet.”
A man in maintenance clothing burst through the stairwell door.
He saw us and reached into his jacket.
A security officer tackled him before he could pull anything out.
Inside his pocket was a photograph of Lily.
And the address of the safe house.
The man refused to speak.
But his phone contained one recent text.
MOVE THE CHILD BEFORE BENNETT TALKS TO FEDERAL AGENTS.
Sender: G.M.
Grant.
The blackout had been deliberate.
The hospital had backup power, but someone had triggered a localized electrical failure near the pediatric wing to create confusion.
Detective Ortiz moved Lily that night to a different protected location with Maria and two officers.
I stayed behind to meet federal investigators.
For the first time, I told strangers everything about my father, my company, Emma, Grant, Claire, and the forged trust petition.
When I finished, one agent closed his notebook.
“Mr. Bennett, there’s something you should know.”
“What?”
“Grant Mercer withdrew twelve million dollars this morning.”
“From where?”
The agent turned his laptop toward me.
From Lily’s trust.

The authorization carried my electronic signature.
And it had been approved ten minutes after I arrived at the hospital.
