Chapter 2 - THE MARKS I NEVER SAW

I stared at my daughter.

“What do you mean, sweetheart?”

Lily buried her face in my shirt.

Claire’s voice sharpened. “She’s three, Daniel. She doesn’t know what she’s saying.”

Maria stood. “She knows.”

Claire spun toward her. “Shut up.”

That was the moment I stopped seeing an argument and started seeing danger.

I carried Lily out of the nursery and told Maria to come with me. Claire followed, insisting I was overreacting, that the video looked worse than it was, that Lily had been having tantrums for weeks.

At Boston Children’s urgent care, the doctor examined Lily and found bruises in different stages of healing along her upper arms and one near her ribs.

“Could these be from normal play?” I asked.

The doctor’s expression stayed careful. “Some could. Taken together, I’m concerned.”

Concerned.

The word landed like a hammer.

A social worker asked who cared for Lily during the day.

“Maria,” Claire said immediately.

Maria looked at me. “Not every day.”

I turned. “What does that mean?”

“Mrs. Bennett sent me home early four times this month.”

Claire laughed. “Because you were exhausted.”

“No. Because you said you wanted private time with Lily.”

I remembered Claire telling me she was trying harder to bond with my daughter.

I had thanked her.

The shame made me nauseous.

The hospital asked us to remain while child protective services was notified. Claire pulled me aside near the vending machines.

“Daniel, listen to me. Maria is setting me up.”

“Why would she?”

“Money. Revenge. I don’t know.”

I studied the woman I had married eighteen months earlier. The woman who had stood beside me at Emma’s grave and promised she would never try to replace Lily’s mother.

Then my phone buzzed.

A notification from the nursery camera cloud backup.

Motion archive available: 47 clips.

Forty-seven.

Maria saw the screen over my shoulder.

Her face drained of color.

“Mr. Bennett,” she whispered, “don’t open those here.”

“Why?”

May you like

She looked toward Claire.

“Because I think some of them were recorded at night.”
