Chapter 1 - Blood on the Marble

My fiancée was dragging a bleeding woman across my hallway when I woke up.
At 12:17 a.m., I stepped out of my bedroom and saw Camila Sloane pulling Rose Mendoza by the wrists. Blood streaked the white marble behind them. A broken antique mirror glittered across the floor like ice.
For one second, my mind refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Then Rose's head rolled to the side.
"Camila! What the hell are you doing?"
My fiancée froze. She was still wearing the black silk gown from the charity gala, her diamond earrings flashing beneath the hallway lights. Her hands were red.
"Alex, thank God." She released Rose and lifted both palms. "She fell. I was trying to get her out of the glass."
"Then why are you dragging her?"
"She was confused. She attacked me."
I dropped beside Rose. A cut above her eyebrow was pouring blood. Her breathing came in shallow, uneven pulls.
"Rose, can you hear me?"
Her eyelids fluttered. Her fingers caught my sleeve.
"The boy," she whispered. "She knows about Matthew."
Camila's face changed. It lasted less than a second, but I saw it. The color drained from her cheeks, and her mouth opened without a sound.
"She's delirious," Camila said quickly. "She hit her head. Don't listen to her."
"Who is Matthew?"
Rose tried to answer. Her eyes rolled back, and her hand slipped from my sleeve.
I called 911.
Camila grabbed my wrist. "No ambulance. Do you understand what that will do to us? There are reporters outside the gates every week."
I stared at her. "A woman is bleeding on my floor."
"I'm trying to protect you."
"Then get out of my way."
The paramedics arrived fourteen minutes later. At Stamford Hospital, a doctor told me Rose had a concussion, two broken fingers, and several deep cuts. She would live, but the next few hours mattered.
At 3:06 a.m., Rose opened her eyes.
"Tell me who Matthew is," I said.
She swallowed. "My son. He's seven."
"And why did Camila look terrified when you said his name?"
Rose turned her face toward the door.

"Because his father was your brother. Nicholas."
My brother had been dead for seven years.
