Chapter 8 - The Box at the Harbor Bank

I moved Matthew to a second safe location and doubled the security detail. Grace took the threat to a detective she trusted, but she warned me not to expect quick arrests. The message had come through a prepaid phone, and the photograph could have been taken by anyone with access to the apartment hallway.
The brass key led us to a storage locker at Dock Seventeen. Behind a rusted metal door, we found a waterproof case, a spare phone, and a small black notebook.
The notebook was Nicholas's.
It listed payments to shell companies, fake construction bids, and transfers from Vance Global to an account controlled by Sloane Holdings. The total was more than one hundred and eighty million dollars. Some payments were disguised as emergency repairs. Others were routed through subcontractors that had no employees, no equipment, and no real offices. The dates lined up with three major Vance projects, including a warehouse collapse that had injured six workers. Nicholas had not been chasing a corporate bookkeeping mistake. He had found a system built to make people rich while everyone else paid the price.
Grace read the entries twice.
"This is enough to start a federal investigation," she said. "But it doesn't prove Camila knew about the boat."
The spare phone had one saved video. Nicholas appeared on the screen, thinner than I remembered, with a scar running from his ear to his jaw.
"Alex, if you're seeing this, Rose got the key to you. I'm sorry I waited. I thought staying away would keep her and Matthew safe. I was wrong."
He glanced over his shoulder.
"The money trail leads to Dad's old private office. There's a second ledger behind the wall panel. But don't trust anyone who tells you this is only about money. They need Matthew's birth certificate destroyed."
The video ended.
Grace looked at me. "Why would they care about a birth certificate?"

I opened the notebook to the last page. Nicholas had written one sentence in red ink.
MATTHEW IS THE HEIR THEY CAN'T AFFORD TO ACKNOWLEDGE.
