Chapter 2 - The Name That Should Have Stayed Buried

I couldn't speak. Nicholas had been twenty-nine when his boat exploded off the Connecticut coast. The Coast Guard found wreckage, blood, and one of his shoes. They never found his body, but after months of searching, my family held a funeral anyway. The service had been held in the chapel on our estate. Camila sat in the front row beside my father, wearing black and holding my hand so tightly that my fingers went numb. I remembered thinking she was the only person who understood what I had lost. The memory now felt like a cruel joke.
I had stood beside an empty coffin and watched my father lower his head. My father died two winters later, taking whatever he knew with him.
For months afterward, I kept expecting Nicholas to walk into the kitchen and complain that the coffee tasted like burnt dirt. I saved his last voicemail. I kept his number in my phone long after the carrier disconnected it. Grief had become part of the house, as ordinary and permanent as the staircase. I had never questioned the story because questioning it felt like betraying the dead.
Now Rose was telling me that my dead brother had a son.
"Why didn't you tell me?" I asked.
"Because I was afraid." Her voice was thin, but steady. "Your family had power. Camila had access to everything. I thought keeping Matthew away from the Vances was the only way to keep him alive."
"Did Nicholas know about the child?"
Tears gathered in her eyes. "He was there when Matthew was born. He held him. He promised he would come back."
"But he died."
Rose shook her head, then winced. "That's what they wanted us to believe."
I leaned forward. "What are you saying?"
"Three weeks ago, Nicholas came to see me. He was thinner. He had a scar near his ear. But it was him. He said he had proof that someone inside Vance Global had arranged the boat explosion. He told me not to trust Camila."
The monitor beside her bed beeped faster.
"Why would Camila hurt you tonight?"
Rose closed her eyes. "She found the photograph. The one Nicholas sent. She wanted the key."
"What key?"
Rose looked at me again. "It's hidden in the frame of the mirror she broke. Nicholas said it would lead you to the truth."
I stood so quickly my chair scraped the floor.
"I'll get it."
She caught my hand. Her grip was weak, but desperate.
"Mr. Vance, listen to me. Matthew is with my neighbor in Bridgeport. Don't tell Camila where he is. Don't tell anyone at your company."
"I'll protect him."

Rose's eyes filled with fear.
"You don't understand. Camila knows where he lives."
