Chapter 17 - The Voice They Couldn't Silence

The room fell silent. Nicholas walked to the head of the table and placed his hands on the chair he had once occupied as vice president of Vance Global.
Richard Sloane backed away.
"This is a fraud," he said. "That man is an impostor."
Nicholas placed his old employee badge on the table, then a medical record from the clinic where Elias had taken him after the explosion. Grace presented the original insurance file, the mechanic's photograph, and the ledger recovered from the lighthouse.
The state investigators entered with a warrant.
Richard tried to leave. Two officers blocked the door.
"You don't understand what you're doing," he snapped. "This company employs thousands of people. You can't tear it apart because of a family dispute."
"It stopped being a family dispute when you paid men to blow up a boat," Nicholas said.
Camila was not in the room. Her attorney claimed she was at home, but Omar had already found her car outside a private airfield.
Grace received a message from the detective. Camila had boarded a charter plane using a false name.
Then another message arrived.
The police had found her phone in the terminal. It contained a scheduled text to a number registered to a private security firm.
The message read: IF I DON'T CALL BY SIX, TAKE THE BOY.
Nicholas looked at me.
"Where is Matthew?"

I checked the clock.
It was 5:42.
