Chapter 7 - Camila's Perfect Story

Camila was waiting in the dining room when I returned to the estate. She had changed into a cream sweater and was drinking tea from my mother's favorite cup.
"You look tired," she said.
"I spoke to Elias Ward."
Her hand stopped halfway to the saucer.
"Who?"
"The mechanic from Nicholas's boat."
She set the cup down carefully. "Alex, you're letting grief make you irrational. Rose has been feeding you stories. That woman has always wanted money."
"She never asked me for a dollar."
"Maybe she was waiting for the right moment."
I placed the photograph on the table. Camila looked at it without touching it.
"You were at the dock that night."
Her face tightened. "I went there because Nicholas asked me to meet him. He was unstable. He said he was leaving the company and taking confidential files."
"You told the police he was alone."
"I was protecting your family."
"From what?"
She leaned forward. "From your brother. He was stealing from the company. He was going to destroy everything your father built."
I watched her eyes. There was anger there, but also fear.
"Did you see him after the explosion?"
Camila stood. "This conversation is over."
"That's not an answer."
She walked toward the stairs, then stopped.
"You should ask yourself why Nicholas hid a child from you. Maybe he knew exactly what kind of man he was."
When she disappeared upstairs, I checked the recorder in my pocket. It had captured every word.
Then my phone lit up with a message from an unknown number.
