Chapter 10 - SCOTT'S PRICE

Scott Voss looked nothing like the man in Daniel's childhood photographs.
His left eye was swollen nearly shut. His wrist was cuffed to the hospital bed. He kept asking whether Lenora knew he was alive.
Detective Salazar finally said, "Why are you afraid of your aunt?"
Scott laughed painfully. "Because Aunt Lenora doesn't forgive loose ends."
Then he asked for a lawyer and a deal.
By midnight, he was talking.
Lenora had hired him four months before Owen's birth. At first the assignment was simple: investigate Elise, find evidence of an affair, drug use, debt, anything that could pressure Daniel into a postnuptial agreement.
Scott found nothing.
So Lenora changed the job.
"Create concern," Scott said.
Fake texts. Cropped photographs. Anonymous reports. Access to fertility files. A legal strategy designed to make Elise look unstable and Daniel look frightened enough to support temporary guardianship.
"Why guardianship?" Daniel asked.
Scott stared at him. "Because of the trust."
Owen's birth moved voting power and money out of Lenora's control. If Daniel's paternity could be challenged while Elise was declared unfit, Lenora planned to petition as temporary guardian and freeze the transfer.
"The washer?" I asked.
Scott looked sick.
"That wasn't supposed to happen with anybody there."
"What does that mean?"
He swallowed. "She wanted a scene police couldn't ignore. She said the baby would be safe. She was going to put him in the washer, call 911, and say she found him there after Elise disappeared."
Elise covered her mouth.
"And my phone?"
"She needed it to make the timeline."
Daniel's voice dropped. "The man at the fence?"
Scott nodded. "Me. I was supposed to wipe the router backups. I ran when you came out."
"Who attacked you?"
Scott looked toward the door.
"I don't know."
Salazar didn't believe him.
Neither did I.
Finally Scott whispered, "Lenora has another partner. Somebody inside Voss Industrial."
Daniel frowned. "Who?"
Scott's eyes moved to him.
"The person who benefits if both you and Owen lose control of the trust."
May you like
Then he said the name.
Daniel stopped breathing.
