Chapter 15 - THE SAFE

Daniel's father had been dead six years.

His office remained locked in a small Voss family property outside Scottsdale, preserved by Lenora as if grief could be managed with dust covers.

Police reached it first.

Behind a framed photograph was a wall safe.

Inside were tax records, company minutes, and a sealed envelope with Daniel's name.

He opened it with Elise beside him and Owen asleep against her chest.

The letter was dated eight months before Daniel's cancer diagnosis.

Son,

If you are reading this, I waited too long.

Your mother and Grant have been moving money through vendor companies I do not recognize. I confronted them. Grant threatened to expose private medical information and remove me from the board. Your mother begged me not to destroy the family.

I chose silence.

That was cowardice.

Attached were copies of bank transfers and board records showing the theft had begun years before Owen, years before Elise, years before infertility.

The crisis had only exposed what was already there.

Then Daniel reached the final page.

His father had amended the trust shortly before his death.

The beneficiary clause no longer required biological descent.

It defined Daniel's child as any child he legally acknowledged and raised as his own.

Owen's inheritance was protected whether Daniel was fertile or not.

Lenora had known.

Her donor argument was never legally useful.

It was emotional warfare designed to break Daniel and Elise apart while Grant attacked the trust from another direction.

Elise looked at Daniel. "She knew Owen was protected."

"Yes."

"Then why risk everything?"

Daniel read one handwritten note attached to the amendment.

If Daniel's household fractures, Lenora may petition as successor family trustee under incapacity provisions.

He whispered, "Because she didn't need Owen declared illegitimate."

He looked at Elise.

"She needed us declared incapable."

A detective entered the room.

"We found Grant."

Daniel stood.

"Where?"

The detective hesitated.

"At the hospital where Scott Voss is being treated."

May you like

"Why?"

"Scott's room alarm went off ten minutes ago. Grant was inside."
