Chapter 16 - THE LAST LOOSE END

Grant had tried to smother Scott with a pillow.

A nurse walked in before he finished.

After police dragged Grant away, Scott chose survival over loyalty.

He gave prosecutors everything.

Emails.

Invoices.

Burner-phone numbers.

A spreadsheet titled FAMILY CONTINGENCY.

The rows were chilling in their simplicity.

Phase One: create maternal instability.

Phase Two: isolate Daniel.

Phase Three: emergency guardianship.

Phase Four: freeze descendant trust.

Phase Five: resolve audit exposure.

Beside "laundry incident," Lenora's initials appeared.

Beside "digital signature," Scott's.

Beside "medical access," Melissa's.

Beside "financial cleanup," Grant's.

Elise stared at the screen for a long time.

"They turned our baby into a business problem."

Daniel reached for her hand, but stopped before touching it.

Elise took his hand.

"We're still going to therapy," she said.

"I know."

"And you don't get to say 'I didn't know' forever."

"I know that too."

His guilt was about the years Lenora controlled every crisis in his life and he called it love.

At the preliminary hearing, prosecutors added kidnapping, conspiracy, identity misuse, witness tampering, and financial crimes.

Then Warren Pike asked to speak privately with Daniel.

The lawyer looked terrified.

"I need to correct something."

Daniel's face hardened. "What?"

"Your mother did not forge every document."

Elise went still.

Pike placed one page on the table.

It was a guardianship authorization signed by Daniel three months before Owen's birth.

The signature was real.

Daniel stared at it.

"I don't remember this."

May you like

Pike swallowed.

"You signed it in my office."
