Chapter 5 - THE DONOR SECRET

Elise opened the draft with shaking hands.

It wasn't a court filing. Not yet.

It was a legal memo addressed to Lenora from a lawyer named Warren Pike. The document described possible ways to challenge Daniel's parental status if Lenora could show that the fertility treatment occurred without "informed spousal consent."

"But I signed everything."

"You did," Elise said.

She pulled a blue binder from the office cabinet. Inside were the original fertility documents, each page initialed by both of them. Daniel had signed the donor-conception agreement before Elise ever began medication.

But the memo contained another line.

If paternity is disrupted, the Voss Family Descendant Trust remains under current trusteeship pending judicial review.

Elise looked at Daniel. "What trust?"

He sat down slowly.

Daniel's grandfather had created it decades earlier. Most of the money was locked until the birth of Daniel's first legally acknowledged child. When that happened, part of the voting control in Voss Industrial shifted away from Lenora's branch of the family and into a protected trust for the child.

Owen's birth had triggered the transfer.

Eleven million dollars and seventeen percent of the family company's voting shares.

I stared at Daniel. "Your mother loses control because Owen exists?"

"Not loses everything," he said. "But enough."

Elise's face hardened. "So this isn't about blood."

Daniel looked sick. "It's about control."

His phone rang.

Warren Pike's name appeared on the screen.

Daniel answered on speaker.

"Daniel," the lawyer said, "your mother has been taken to the hospital. She says Claire assaulted her while Elise endangered the baby. She wants an emergency protective order."

"Against whom?"

A pause.

"Elise."

Daniel stood so fast the chair tipped over.

"She's the baby's mother."

"I know."

"Then why are you calling me?"

May you like

Another pause.

"Because your signature is on the petition."
