Chapter 13 - THE EMPTY BASSINET

We reached the house with police four minutes after the alarm.

The nursery window was open.

Owen's bassinet was empty.

Elise screamed.

Then the nanny camera chirped from the hallway.

A recorded clip showed a woman in hospital scrubs entering with a key, lifting Owen, and leaving through the garage.

She was not Lenora.

Daniel stared at the screen. "Melissa."

The former oncology nurse.

Her interview had been a performance.

Detective Salazar issued an alert immediately. Airport police, hospitals, toll cameras, highway patrol.

Elise stood in the nursery holding Owen's blanket as if her body no longer knew what to do without him.

"She knows newborn routines," she whispered. "She knows how to move him without anyone questioning her."

Twenty minutes later, a traffic camera found Melissa's car heading north on Interstate 17.

Daniel and I followed police north. Then Elise's phone rang.

Lenora.

Elise put it on speaker.

"If you want the baby safe," Lenora said, "tell Daniel to withdraw the trust complaint."

Elise's face changed from terror to something harder.

"You put my son in a washing machine."

"I never hurt him."

"You stole him."

"I'm protecting this family from you."

"Where is Owen?"

Lenora hung up.

Salazar had been tracing the call.

It came from a roadside motel outside Black Canyon City.

Police reached it first.

Room 214 was empty.

But on the bed sat Owen's yellow receiving blanket.

Beside it was a printed copy of the Voss trust amendment.

One paragraph had been highlighted.

If the beneficiary dies before final acceptance, voting rights revert to the original trustee.

Daniel stared at the sentence.

Then the motel manager ran into the room.

"The woman with the baby just left through the service lot."

"Which woman?" Salazar asked.

The manager pointed toward the highway.

"The grandmother."
