Chapter 11 - THEY CAME FOR MY DAUGHTER

The hotel went into lockdown.

Elevators froze.

Garage gates closed.

Armed security covered every entrance.

Catherine held Penelope in the safe room while I stood outside with Luis and Naomi.

Victor Hale had commanded the men who held my wife for two years.

He knew her habits.

He knew my mother’s methods.

And now he wanted my daughter.

At 10:04 p.m., a fire alarm sounded on the seventeenth floor.

Luis cursed.

“Diversion.”

Smoke detectors triggered.

Guests began leaving rooms.

The lobby filled with confusion.

Then the penthouse power died.

Emergency lights turned red.

Catherine screamed my name.

I ran to the safe room.

The biometric lock had failed.

Someone had overridden it from inside the hotel system.

Luis smashed the control panel.

Naomi called tactical agents.

Then Catherine shouted from behind the steel door.

“Someone’s in the service hall!”

I took the emergency key and opened the secondary access.

A man came around the corner.

Victor.

Older than I expected.

Gray beard.

Pistol raised.

I moved before I thought.

The shot hit the wall.

Luis slammed Victor into a service cart.

The gun skidded away.

Victor reached for a knife.

Naomi kicked it from his hand.

Three agents dragged him down.

Catherine emerged holding Penelope so tightly the baby cried.

Victor laughed from the floor.

“You think arresting me ends this?”

I stepped closer.

“Tell me why my mother wanted Penelope.”

He smiled.

“Because Penelope changes the company.”

“I know about the will.”

“No.”

Victor shook his head.

“You know the old will.”

My stomach tightened.

“What old will?”

Victor looked at Catherine.

“Thomas changed it again before he died.”

Naomi crouched.

“Where is it?”

Victor laughed.

“Ask the child’s godfather.”

Catherine stared at me.

Penelope did not have a godfather.

At least, not one I knew about.

Then Marcus called from the hospital.

His voice was weak.

“Samuel... Thomas named me in the final will.”

May you like

And suddenly Marcus was no longer just my investigator.

He was the keeper of the secret Daria had spent seven years trying to bury.
