Chapter 16 - THE BLUE DECANTER

Federal agents sealed Dariaâs mansion before dawn.
The blue decanter was exactly where Elena remembered.
Locked inside a display cabinet in Thomasâs old study.
Chemical analysis found microscopic residue of the same toxin referenced in Dariaâs shell-company purchase.
It was not just motive anymore.
It was physical evidence.
Naomi called a judge.
An arrest warrant was approved before sunrise.
But Daria had vanished.
Her attorneys claimed they did not know where she was.
Her bank accounts began moving money overseas.
Luis found the first clue.
A company helicopter had left one of Kincaid Enterprisesâ private facilities without filing a route.
Destination unknown.
Catherine stood beside the window holding Penelope.
âSheâs running.â
âNo,â I said.
âShe doesnât run.â
âWhat does she do?â
âShe comes back for control.â
At 8:17 a.m., my phone rang.
Daria.
Naomi motioned for everyone to stay silent.
I answered.
âMother.â
A laugh.
âStill calling me that?â
âOld habits.â
âYou found Elena.â
âYes.â
âHow touching.â
âWhere are you?â
âSomewhere you should remember.â
I looked at Marcus.
He mouthed one word.
Hawthorne.
Daria continued.
âYou brought strangers into our family, Samuel. Catherine. Investigators. That woman.â
âThat woman gave birth to me.â
âI raised you.â
âYou owned me.â
Her voice sharpened.
âI made you.â
âNo. You stole me.â
Silence.
Then Penelope laughed softly behind me.
Daria heard it.
âSheâs there.â
My stomach tightened.
âLeave my daughter out of this.â
âI tried.â
The line went dead.
Seconds later, alarms sounded across the hotel.
Luis looked at his tablet.
âAnother breach.â
Not the penthouse.
The parking garage.
We ran downstairs.
A black SUV smashed through the exit barrier.
Inside the rear seat, someone was struggling.
Catherine reached us, saw the security image and screamed.
âElena!â
Daria had not run away.
She had taken my biological mother.
May you like
And the SUV was heading north.
Toward Hawthorne Ridge.
