Chapter 13 - CATHERINEâS SECRET

Catherine sat across from me.
âI was pregnant before I disappeared. I knew that.â
I waited.
âBut I had discovered something else.â
She reached into the old handbag she had carried when she escaped.
From a hidden seam, she removed a tiny folded document wrapped in plastic.
A laboratory report.
âYour mother had been secretly testing you.â
âTesting me for what?â
âPaternity.â
I stared at her.
Catherine shook her head.
âNot Penelopeâs paternity. Yours.â
The room seemed to tilt.
âMy father was Thomas Kincaid.â
âYes.â
âBut Daria was afraid a DNA test would show she wasnât your biological mother.â
Silence.
Catherine explained.
Months before she vanished, she found records showing Daria had given birth to a stillborn son.
Three days later, infant Samuel Kincaid appeared in the family records.
No hospital transfer documents.
No adoption papers.
No birth certificate with a doctorâs signature.
Only money.
A lot of it.
Naomi leaned forward.
âYou think Samuel was illegally adopted?â
Catherine nodded.
âThomas knew. Daria didnât want anyone else to know.â
âWhy would that matter now?â
Marcus answered.
âBecause Thomasâs family trust gives succession rights to his biological descendants. If Samuel is Thomasâs son but not Dariaâs, she has no maternal claim over the trust.â
My mind raced.
âThen who was my mother?â
Catherine looked at me with painful hesitation.
âI donât know.â
Naomi ordered immediate independent DNA testing.
The result took six hours.
Thomasâs stored medical sample confirmed he was my biological father.
Daria was not my biological mother.
I read the result three times.
The woman who had controlled my entire life had lied about the first fact of my existence.
Then Naomi received another call.
âWe found Samuelâs original birth certificate.â
âWhere?â
âChurch archive outside Bellweather.â
A photograph arrived.
Mother: ELENA MARSH.
I had never heard the name.
Marcus had.
His face drained of color.
âSamuel... Elena Marsh was a housekeeper at the Kincaid estate.â
âWhat happened to her?â
Marcus looked toward Naomi.
âShe disappeared thirty-eight years ago.â
Daria had not just stolen money.
May you like
She had stolen a child.
Me.
