Chapter 19 - WHAT WE DID WITH HER EMPIRE

I sold the mansion.

Daria learned about it from jail.

According to her attorney, she screamed for twenty minutes.

I wish I could say I felt nothing.

The truth was more complicated.

That house held my childhood.

Birthdays.

Christmas mornings.

My father teaching me chess.

My mother—Daria—bandaging my knee when I fell off a bicycle.

Evil rarely arrives as a monster every day.

Sometimes it makes breakfast.

Sometimes it kisses your forehead.

Sometimes it spends decades teaching you to call control love.

That was the hardest lesson.

The mansion sold for twelve million dollars.

I used half to create the Thomas and Elena Foundation for victims of coercive control, kidnapping and identity fraud.

The other half went into a trust for Penelope.

Catherine returned to the company slowly.

Not as “Samuel’s wife.”

As herself.

She joined the foundation board and became the loudest voice in every room where someone suggested survivors should simply move on.

“You don’t move on,” she told me once.

“You move forward.”

Marcus and Anna moved to Colorado.

Naomi refused every thank-you gift I offered.

Elena moved closer to us.

The first time she held Penelope alone, she cried so hard Catherine had to sit beside her.

Three generations of women.

One stolen.

One imprisoned.

One born in captivity.

All alive.

Six months later, Daria’s trial began.

I testified for two days.

Catherine testified for three.

Elena only needed forty minutes.

The prosecutor asked what Daria had taken from her.

Elena looked directly at the jury.

“Thirty-eight years with my son.”

No one in the room moved.

Then the prosecutor asked if she wanted revenge.

Elena shook her head.

“No.”

“What do you want?”

“The truth to stay alive longer than her lies.”

The jury deliberated eleven hours.

When they returned, Catherine squeezed my hand.

The foreman stood.

“On the charge of murder in the first degree...”

He paused.

May you like

Daria stared at me.

And for the first time, she had no idea what would happen next.
